Traditional education assumes that there is a knowledgable instructor providing content to a number of students. Most educators today reject the "Sage on the Stage" model of yore, but still "provide" direct instruction along with activities. This still ignores the great potential of students teaching each other (obviously, with planning, support and scaffolding provided by the instructor). This planning, support and scaffolding requires that the teacher frames her/his job as engaging students as teachers of their fellow students. Over 100 years ago John Dewey noted that learning is essentially a social enterprise, i.e., we learn from one another. In this session, we will explore the following:

* How to increase student engagement by empowering them as teachers.

* How to structure the classroom and lesson plans to enhance social learning.

* How to use formative and summative assessments as teaching moments.

* How social learning enhances social cohesion and ameliorates the problem of differentiation.

* How a sense of community arises from this approach and promotes social/emotional learning.
